A brief overview of types of safety sign.;

 

Safety signs are often referred to generically as warning signs.
Although there is a vast array of different legislation and requirement as to what you legally must show in a workplace or business premises they can be categorised into (although not restricted to) 5  main types of safety sign.

 

Fire Signs

Safe Condition Signs

 

Square or rectangular in shape, informing visitors and staff to the safe way generally to fire exits or fire assembly points. White text or symbols.

 

Prohibition Signs

 

Generally define that a certain act or behaviour is by nature prohibited, the most popular of these now of course is the No Smoking Sign. A red circle crossed diagonally on a white background with black symbol.

 

Mandatory Signs

 

Denote that a specific course of action must be adhered to  e.g.
‘Safety helmets must be worn in this area’. The safety sign itself consists of a blue circle containing white text and symbols.

 

Warning signs

 

Explain a particular hazard may be present. A black triangle with black text and symbol coloured in yellow. One of the more recognisable of these although hopefully rarely spotted is the Radiation safety warning sign.
